StoryMaker is an open source app for making and publishing multimedia stories with any Android phone or device, as safely and securely as possible. StoryMaker provides an interactive storytelling training guide, walkthroughs, and templates for users to follow as they plan their story and capture media.

The proliferation of mobile technology has put media tools in the hands of millions around the globe. But that is only part of what’s necessary to tell powerful stories that make an impact. The other part is professional training.

Small World News has conducted dozens of workshops in countries around the globe. In the last year Small World News has conducted trainings in Serbia, Kurdistan, Afghanistan and Burundi alone.  Trainings can range from a few days to a few weeks. We have provided workshop to individual news organizations run in their own newsrooms as well as workshops arranged by a local partner open to the community of journalists and activists.

We offer a team of highly experienced trainers and a network of local partners (see About), along with variety of training resources (see Guides) and work with organizations to develop a workshop to fit their specific needs.

Alive in Baghdad 

Started in 2005 and was the groundbreaking first project in the Alive.in/ series. It employed Iraqi journalists to produce video packages each week about a variety of topics about daily life in Iraq. Through the work of a team of Americans and Iraqi correspondents on the ground, Alive in Baghdad showed the conflict through the eyes of Iraqis. Alive in Baghdad brought testimony from individual Iraqis, footage of daily life in Iraq, and short news segments from Iraq to you. visit www.aliveinbaghdad.org

Alive in Afghanistan 

Began in 2009 as an effort to provide more context to the coverage of Afghanistan’s presidential election. Through sourcing reports from Pajhwok, Afghanistan’s leading local news agency, Alive in Afghanistan helped shed light on widespread fraud. By combining reporting from Afghan journalists, news reports, and data from Election Observation Missions, the project offefed the world a timely and comprehensive understanding of events in Afghanistan. visit www.aliveinafghanistan.org

Alive in Honduras 

Aggregated and translated reports from citizens on the ground in response to the attempted coup in 2009. Later a partnership was developed with Habla Honduras to provide English translation of their content and others. visit www.aliveinhonduras.org

Alive in Gaza 

Started in January 2009 to assist in the gathering of analysis and factual information about the situation in Gaza in one place. It was Alive in Gaza’s mission to not only provide the audience with a window into Gazan life, but also a wider understanding of the fundamental issues that made life in Gaza what it is today. visitwww.alive.in/gaza

Alive In Egypt 

Created after Google and Twitter introduced the @speak2tweet dial-to-tweet service. Both companies wanted to see these phone conversations translated into English (most were in Arabic) and asked outside organizations for assistance. These organizations, Small World News and Yamli, assembled a core team whose mission was to bring the voices of Egyptians directly to those who could not understand http://alive.in/egypt/

Alive in Mexico 

Offered a wide variety of news stories about life in Mexico. Alive in Mexico covered everything from street battles in southern Mexico to Mexican culture and history, allowing viewers to tune in each week to learn something new about Mexico. Alive in Libya

Established in March 2011, remains one of the only source of free and independent news created by Libyan journalists. The project is produced by Small World News: Libya bureau, currently based in Benghazi. Utilizing a team of a full-time staff in Libya and the US, and volunteers located around the world, Alive in Libya produces video and articles focused on the daily life of Libyans. Each piece is conceived and shot in Libya and then translated by a team of volunteers. visit www.alive.in/libya

Alive in Syria 

Started in 2011 amidst the growing violence of the Arab Spring, Alive in Syria was driven by the pressing need forf democratic movements to communicate the reality of events actively denied by authoritarian governments and state-run media. Alive in Tehran 

Provided Iranians tools to produce and distribute media. Small World News worked with Iranians in Tehran and around the country to disseminate their voices through recorded phone, videos, photos and blogging.
